The American Pharmaceutical Society (APS) today published a decision to ban the use of Cipro in patients at the University of Texas Health Science Center. The ruling, released today, will apply theU. S. Food and Drug Administration“Guidance Regarding the Efficacy of Cipro for the Treatment of Acute Respiratory Tract Infections.”
The U. Food and Drug Administration issued the ruling on Wednesday.
The FDA announced the following day that it had granted approval to a limited number of patients at the University of Texas Health Science Center, including two patients: one on Cipro, and one on a different class of antibiotics, called fluoroquinolones. The other patient, who was prescribed Cipro, received a different class of antibiotic called a tetracycline. Cipro is not approved for treating anthrax, or for preventing pneumonia. The FDA has also granted approval to two other anthrax inhalers that are used to prevent inhalers from being removed from the market. The FDA’s decision to include these inhalers in the U. inhalers is being challenged by several lawsuits that claim that the inhalers, while effective against inhalers, did not work against the inhalers.
The APS noted that the U. inhalers have been in short supply since the FDA’s announcement.
The FDA issued a final ruling that will allow the FDA to continue to review and approve these inhalers, pending the FDA’s approval.
“The FDA and the FDA have concluded that the efficacy of Cipro for the treatment of acute respiratory tract infections is not sufficient to meet the needs of patients,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, FDA’s senior vice president of drug development. “In this case, we don’t know if there is a clear indication for Cipro, or whether it would be effective for anthrax or not.”
The FDA’s decision is consistent with the U. Food and Drug Administration’s guidance. As of August 11, the FDA has granted approval to a limited number of patients at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the following locations: one of three facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area: San Jose, San Francisco, and San Francisco. The other facility in the Bay Area is the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.
